Mexico IP Director General meeting James Tumbridge and Anna Manville

As part of the International Trade Mark Association I was delighted to meet with Miguel Angel Margain the Director General of the Mexico IP Office. He joined the INTA GI Committee to discuss the Mexico EU Geographical Indication Agreement, which I deputy chair. The European Union and Mexico having reached an "agreement in principle" on the main trade parts of a new EU-Mexico association agreement this month. The new agreement replaces a previous deal between the EU and Mexico from 2000. Issues are resolved on wine and spirits and most food products, so it is looking positive for an enhanced trade agreement with Europe.  Miguel took our questions and explained the impact of the US on Mexico’s positions.  Mexico was very open to protection for European indications and wee were grateful for his frankness, and positive outlook.
